PhD student (f/m/x) or Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/x) ) in Characterizing Cognitive Decline using Digital Cognitive Assessments

The DZNE in Magdeburg is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher or PhD Student to join the Clinical Cognitive Neuroscience group led by Dr David Berron . Our research focuses on three major aims. We aim to develop disease-stage specific imaging and cognitive markers that allow to detect cognitive impairment but also to monitor cognitive and brain decline. Here we focus particularly on digital cognitive markers and ecological momentary assessments using remote testing via mobile devices such as smartphones and their combination with biomarkers for future health care and clinical trial applications. We conduct studies to understand the functional architecture of cognitive functions with a specific focus on human memory and the medial temporal lobe using structural and functional MRI at 3 and 7 Tesla. Finally, we investigate the effects of disease pathology, such as amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles measured using biomarkers, on functional brain systems and use longitudinal experimental designs and advanced statistical models to understand the sequence of changes in early stages of neurodegenerative diseases.


Your tasks

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student or postdoctoral researcher to join our team. You should be interested in human cognition and cognitive impairment in neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease), as well as in smartphone-based cognitive testing. You should also be passionate about statistical data analysis and longitudinal modelling. Your tasks will include preparing, applying and interpreting comprehensive cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses on cognitive data (e.g. neuropsychological assessments and high-frequency smartphone-based cognitive data) in combination with neuroimaging (e.g. MRI, fMRI) and biomarker data (e.g., CSF and plasma biomarkers). You will work on samples including cognitively normal individuals and those in preclinical and clinical stages of Alzheimer’s disease with defined biomarker profiles. A crucial part of your work will be advanced statistical analyses (linear mixed-effects models and multilevel models). There is the opportunity to utilize existing datasets as well as to obtain new data. You will also have the opportunity to present your research to the scientific community at meetings, international conferences and by means of publications. Moreover, you will have the chance to communicate and discuss your research in regular internal meetings and collaborate with other groups at the DZNE, external institutes and our international network of collaborators.

Requirements

PhD student

  • Degree in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, biostatistics or related fields
  • Interest in and basic understanding of cognitive psychology/neuropsychology
  • Basic understanding of/experience in longitudinal modelling of cognitive data (e.g. mixed-effects models and multilevel modelling) and intensive longitudinal designs
  • First experience with ecological momentary assessments, experience sampling methods, or ambulatory assessments
  • Basic understanding of programming (e.g. R, Python) and data visualization is beneficial
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team
  • Fluent in spoken and written English

Postdoctoral researcher

  • PhD in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, biostatistics or related fields.
  • Interest in and basic understanding of cognitive psychology/neuropsychology
  • Experience in longitudinal modelling of cognitive data (e.g. mixed-effects models and multilevel modelling) and intensive longitudinal designs
  • Experience with ecological momentary assessments, experience sampling methods, or ambulatory assessments

  • Peer reviewed publications and a track record of research excellence
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
