The German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) is a world-leading internationally oriented research center, committed to discovering new approaches to prevent and treat neurodegenerative diseases. To this end, researchers at ten DZNE sites across Germany pursue a translational and interdisciplinary strategy comprising five interconnected areas: fundamental research, clinical research, health care research, population health science, and systems medicine. www.dzne.de

PhD Position (f/m/x): “Neuroscientist”

Code: 1099/2022/7

Your tasks

Project description: The Neuroimmunology and Imaging group is interested in understanding microglia-neuron interaction relevant for higher brain functions such as learning and memory. In the project, we manipulate the cytoskeleton of microglia to understand how specific cytoskeleton proteins in microglia impact microglia function with consequences on neuronal networks contributing to learning and memory. In order to better understand the structural integrity of microglia and the interaction of microglia and neuron on network function, we apply cutting edge in vivo 2-photon imaging of microglia and neurons in the hippocampus of the behaving animal.

Requirements

Your profile: Successful candidate should hold a Master degree in biology (neuroscience), biophysics, physics (optics), bioengineering, biochemistry or related disciplines. As a prerequisite the candidate should have experience with confocal microscopy (or 2P-imaging), stereotactic AAV-injections, quantitative histology, image data analysis, or behavior experiments with rodents. Programming skills as well as a FELASA B course or equivalent will be beneficial. Creative, highly motivated applicants who are eager to understand how the brain works and enjoy working independently as a member of a highly collaborative team in a stimulating scientific environment are encouraged to apply.
