PhD student (f/m/x) in Neural Circuit Computation / Computational Neuroscience
The research group ‘Neural Circuit Computations’ led by Jan Gründemann aims to understand how ever-changing environmental stimuli are represented and computed in the brain to elucidate key principals of sensory integration upon learning and memory formation. To address this question, we combine state of the art circuit neuroscience tools like opto- and pharmacogenetics with single and two-photon imaging techniques to reveal computational frameworks of sensory integration in deep brain areas and their effects on behaviour and learning in health and disease (see also https://www.dzne.de/grundemann).
Successful candidates will actively participate in experimental work as well as large scale data analysis. They will work on their independent research projects and present their results at local, national, and international conferences and will prepare manuscripts for publication in international scientific journals.
We are looking for a PhD student with a strong interest in circuit and computational neuroscience. Applicants should hold a master’s degree in life, physical or computer sciences. Prior experience with the relevant experimental techniques (e.g. imaging approaches, electrophysiology, stereotaxic surgery, mouse behaviour or computational neuroscience tools) as well as coding skills will be considered a plus but not a prerequisite. Extensive training will be provided. We are seeking highly motivated individuals with excellent organizational and communication skills and very good language proficiency in English.
The DZNE in Bonn offers an excellent scientific infrastructure with state of the art research facilities. Team members will benefit from an international, collaborative environment alongside other labs focusing on systems neuroscience and neurodegenerative disorders, both within the institute and at neighbouring university departments. PhD students in the lab will receive extensive scientific training and will additionally be provided with opportunities for career development at the DZNE Career Centre. Salary and social benefits will be comparable to other research institutes. The position is available from June 2023 and initially for 3 years.
