Linux Administrator (f/m/x) for scientific IT systems

The DZNE is an interdisciplinary research center within the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers and operates its central scientific IT services at its headquarters in Bonn. We provide high performance computing services, memory-driven computing infrastructures, server support, scientific databases and virtualized analysis environments including AI capabilities and swarm learning infrastructures to scientists requiring sophisticated computing, data and analysis infrastructure. We are looking for a candidate to join our Scientific IT Systems and Software team.

This team is involved in various projects ranging from hardware to software solutions to enable DZNE scientists to efficiently process and analyze large, heterogeneous research data. In addition, the team is responsible for the design, customization and maintenance of tailor-made scientific IT solutions and the operation of the DZNE's High Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure.


Your role in detail

  • Support for scientific Linux systems
  • Development from conception to installation and operation
  • Configuration, documentation, maintenance and further development of the systems
  • Administration of systems of various sizes from VMs to AI-ready GPU systems to the DZNE HPC cluster
  • Close cooperation with the scientists at the DZNE
  • Development and implementation of training courses in the areas of Linux and the use of HPC and GPU systems

Your qualifications

  • A degree in computer science, mathematics, physics or a related subject or comparable training, e.g. as an IT specialist for system integration, is an advantage
  • Knowledge of the administration of enterprise Linux systems and high-performance cluster environments as well as basic knowledge of network technology
  • Experience with the configuration of GPUs for scientific calculations and with batch systems (SLURM) is desirable
  • Experience with container and virtualization technologies (Docker/Singularity/Apptainer, Kubernetes, VMware) is an advantage
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills as well as a cooperative way of working
  • Very good knowledge of German and English
