PhD student (f/m/d)
The DZNE in Bonn is looking for a PhD student (f/m/d) to join the research group of PD Dr. Marc Beyer in association with the DFG-funded International Research Training Group (IRTG 2168) between the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Bonn/Germany and the University of Melbourne/Australia to study CNS immunity.
The Bonn & Melbourne Research and Graduate School (Bo&MeRanG) focuses on the role of innate and adaptive immunity in the context of tissue homeostasis, inflammation & infections. Students will perform the core of their PhD project in Bonn and will spend up to 1 year in Melbourne, jointly supervised by internationally leading principal investigators from both universities. Successful completion results in a joint PhD, which is jointly awarded by the University of Bonn and the University of Melbourne.
The Beyer lab is interested in elucidating the molecular mechanisms of immunoregulatory processes in T cells and myeloid cells and their influence on the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. The lab is using modern single-cell Omics technologies (RNA & epigenome) as well as multi-parameter flow cytometry to characterize the contribution of T cells and myeloid cells to neurodegeneration using genetically modified mouse models. The application of modern genome editing technologies (CRISPR/Cas9), both for transcriptional reprogramming of cells as well as generation of mouse models, is a further focus of the group.
The successful candidate will conduct a research project at the interface of single-cell genomics and molecular immunology focusing on the characterization of CNS tissue-resident T cells in murine model systems of inflammation and neurodegeneration supervised in Bonn by PD Dr. Marc Beyer and in Melbourne by his collaborator Prof. Dr. Axel Kallies (Peter Doherty Institute for Infection & Immunity, University of Melbourne).

- Well-organized and pro-active with an outstanding university degree (Master or equivalent) in a relevant biomedical subject, preferably in the field of immunology, genomics or bioinformatics
- Experience in relevant immunological or genomic techniques
- Applicants should have basic skills in existing tools for genomic/transcriptomic/epigenomic analysis and some programming experience (R, Python, unix shell scripts)
- Prior experience with transgenic animal models or human material, flow cytometry, or next-generation sequencing is of advantage
- Be interested in implementing new methods and improving current protocols
- Good communication and team-working skills
- Showing initiative and flexibility, also regarding working hours when required, will be desirable qualities
- The ability to work in an international team
- Excellent communication and social skills
- Excellent written and spoken English skills are also mandatory for participation in the Bo&MeRanG program. Acceptable proof of language proficiency includes but is not limited to a master’s degree from a program taught in English, IELTS Band 7 or higher, TOEFL iBT > 94, Cambridge AE (C1) > 185 points.
