The German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) is a unique non-university research center which is dedicated to the subject dementia and all its areas, as well as other neurodegenerative diseases. The center compasses the full spectrum of fundamental research through population sciences to health care research. The DZNE stands for excellence in research and science management, translation of scientific results into practice, interdisciplinarity and internationalization. It is a research center within the Helmholtz Organization of German research centers. With over 1000 employees from 55 nations, spread over 10 sites, the DZNE is one of the national and international leading research centers in its research field.

PhD student (f/m/d)

Code: 10016/2019/8

Dragomir Milovanovic will start his lab at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (Deutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen, DZNE) in early 2020. The lab will be located at the vibrant Charité CrossOver Campus in Berlin.

Your tasks

The central focus of Milovanovic Lab will be to understand: How is the spatial organization of organelles and macromolecules regulated in the crowded environment of the cytosol at the nerve terminal?  We hypothesize that the presence of intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs)–low amino acid complexity sequences that do not fold into any stable secondary or tertiary structure—plays an essential role in balancing the solubility with the spatial patterning. Many proteins involved in the synaptic vesicle recycling contain long IDRs. Recently, it was shown that synapsin 1, a highly abundant synaptic protein, forms a distinct liquid phase in an aqueous environment (Milovanovic et al., 2018). Synapsin condensates are reaction centers able to sequester lipid vesicles. This mechanism helped to explain how hundreds of SVs are kept into distinct clusters while maintaining their high mobility (Milovanovic and De Camilli, 2017).

Requirements

Candidates should hold an M.Sc., M.D., or equivalent degree at the time of hire and have expertise in molecular biology techniques, cell biology and mouse genetics. Knowledge of confocal and superresolution microscopy techniques will be an asset. Familiarity with protein biochemistry is desired but not necessary.
