The German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) is a unique non-university research center which is dedicated to the subject dementia and all its areas, as well as other neurodegenerative diseases. The center compasses the full spectrum of fundamental research through population sciences to health care research. The DZNE stands for excellence in research and science management, translation of scientific results into practice, interdisciplinarity and internationalization. It is a research center within the Helmholtz Organization of German research centers. With over 1000 employees from 55 nations, spread over 10 sites, the DZNE is one of the national and international leading research centers in its research field.

Your tasks

We are seeking an interactive and self-motivated PhD student to join a team of biologists and bioinformaticians working on nervous system pathophysiology led by Prof Paolo Salomoni. Candidates must be able to work within a team environment and must be fluent in English with excellent communication skills. Prior experience in neuroscience, epigenetics, bioinformatics as well as molecular biology and analytical methods is considered an advantage for this project. Authorship on research articles is highly meriting, as is previous training in research laboratories. A Master’s degree in Cell/Developmental Biology, Epigenetics or a related subject is also desired.

This work will be conducted by Prof Paolo Salomoni and his team whose main research interest is on chromatin regulation in CNS pathophysiology. In particular, this project aims at investigating the role of chromatin remodelling in regulation of cell identity/fate in normal brain homeostasis, aging and neurodegenerative diseases using a combination of mouse models and state-of-the art genomics and computational approaches. Therefore, the candidate will be exposed to both wet lab and in silico work, thus providing a comprehensive training critical in pursuing a career in science.

Requirements

The successful candidate will be closely interacting with other lab members with expertise ranging from neurobiology, epigenetics and bioinformatics. S/he will be integrated into the neuroscience environment at DZNE and will benefit from interactions with other institutes in Bonn (e.g. LIMES) and abroad (e.g. University College London). The post is based within the DZNE Research Facilities at Bonn Venusberg.  A strong mentoring programme for career development is provided.
