PhD student (f/m) in Multi-omics data analysis and bioinformatics
Site: Tübingen

The German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) investigates the causes of diseases of the nervous system and develops strategies for prevention, treatment and care. It is an institution within the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres with nine sites across Germany (Berlin, Bonn, Dresden, Göttingen, Magdeburg, Munich, Rostock/Greifswald, Tübingen and Witten). The DZNE cooperates closely with universities, their clinics and other research facilities.

A PhD position is available within the scientific team “Genome Biology of Neurodegenerative Diseases” led by prof. Peter Heutink in Tübingen. The research focus of this team is on the identification and characterization of genetic risk factors for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. For further details on the scientific program please refer to

Our systematic characterization of the large number of genetic risk factors identified for Neurodegenerative diseases focuses around High-Throughput/High-Content (HT/HC) cellular screening approaches in human induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPS) derived neurons where we combine high resolution microscopy with Next Generation Sequencing transcriptomic and epigenetic data. Much of our work is performed in close collaboration with International research consortia.

For our complex data analysis team we are looking for highly motivated and ambitious PhD students.

Your tasks:

  • As a PhD student you will be part of our team that implements and develops new methods and algorithms for the analysis of our multi omics data such as genome sequencing; RNA and CAGEseq, ChIPseq, ATACseq and methylation data in combination with high resolution microscopic data from our high-throughput cellular screens.
  • You will be working on data we obtain from a specific disease project and you are expected to analyse and interpret these data in close collaboration with the data analysis team and our wet lab researchers.
  • In the next phase of the project, you will be involved to design validation and follow up experiments leading to publications.

Your profile:

  • Candidates preferably with a MSc in bioinformatics, computer science or molecular biology with a clear affinity to genomics are encouraged to apply

  • Familiarity with complex data analysis such as NGS sequencing data; experience with a scripting language
  • Applicants should be fluent in English and possess good communication and team working skills

We offer:

  • An exiting and challenging task in a research center that works on the state of the art topics of health research
  • Working in an international, highly interactive environment at the DZNE-Tübingen, located on the Neuroscience Campus in Tübingen together with the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research (HIH), the Center for Integrative Neuroscience (CIN) and the Tübingen University Hospital’s Clinical Neurology.
  • Heutink’s research team is involved in a variety of large international consortia with research groups in Germany, Europe, Japan and the US.
  • The opportunity to utilize state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.
  • A high potential for the individual development of our employees
  • Employment, payment and social benefits are consistent with those at other research institutes
  • This full time position is available immediately, with funding for 2 years with the possibility of an extension

You will obtain special skills and knowledge for your scientific qualification during your activities at DZNE. The DZNE is an equal opportunity employer. It is committed to employing disabled individuals and especially encourages them to apply.

Applications should contain the following documents (in English):

  • A detailed Curriculum Vitae
