The German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) investigates the causes of diseases of the nervous system and develops strategies for prevention, treatment and care. It is an institution within the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres with nine sites across Germany (Berlin, Bonn, Dresden, Göttingen, Magdeburg, Munich, Rostock/Greifswald, Tübingen and Witten). The DZNE cooperates closely with universities, their clinics and other research facilities.

Research assistant/postdoc (f/m) – Code 1490/2017/8
You will be working in an interdisciplinary team in Bonn focused on Clinical Research. Clinical research at the DZNE aims to investigate causes and preclinical biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases, and to study normal and pathological brain structure and function in neurodegenerative diseases. To this end the team, led by Prof. Thomas Klockgether, Director of Clinical Research of the DZNE, is currently establishing several clinical studies including MR-imaging in a multi-center and single site setting. The study facility in Bonn encompasses state-of-the art MR facilities, including 3T MRI scanners (Siemens Skyra) as well as a 7T MRI scanner, an advanced bio-banking program, as well as computational infrastructure supported by IT specialists and physicists.
You will be part of a multicenter (DZNE sites Magdeburg, Bonn/ Cologne) research project (“Metabolische und neurovaskuläre Plastizität des Gehirns imAlter und deren Modifizierung durch Amyloidablagerungen und metabolische Risikofaktoren”: ENERGI) investigating whether the interaction of metabolic risk factors and amyloid depositions in the brain influences cognition in older adults with metabolic syndrome and to what extent a combined physical and cognitive intervention (over 4 Months) has a positive impact. All study participants will undergo clinical and neuropsychological assessments, followed by a 4 month exercise intervention, as well as study-specific neuroimaging protocols with repeated and detailed structural and functional MRI, as well as PET imaging. We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious researcher who will contribute both to the recruitment of participants, and data acquisition and analysis.
The applicant should be fluent in German language and have a degree in medicine, biology or another related field (neuroscience, neuropsychology, etc.) and a dedicated interest in neuroimaging / neuroscience. Experience with existing tools for the analysis of neuroimaging data (e.g. with SPM, FSL, FreeSurfer, AFNI, etc.) is preferable, as well as relevant programming experience (e.g. with MATLAB, Python), and proficiency in mathematics and statistics (R, SPSS). Working experience in large-scale clinical studies is highly desirable. These skills can also be acquired at the DZNE.
Demonstrable interest in quantitative research, strong analytical skills, ability for independent and critical thinking, and excellent communication and writing skills in the English language are a prerequisite.
