The German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) is a world-leading internationally oriented research center, committed to discovering new approaches to prevent and treat neurodegenerative diseases. To this end, researchers at ten DZNE sites across Germany pursue a translational and interdisciplinary strategy comprising five interconnected areas: fundamental research, clinical research, health care research, population health science, and systems medicine. www.dzne.de

The research group Translational Brain Research (Prof. J. Herms/Dr. Th. Koeglsperger) is looking for a PhD student with a strong interest in the field of molecular neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease (PD). This PhD project will be focusing on investigating molecular and cellular changes occurring early during the progression of Lewy body pathology (LBP) in PD. The study aims at discovering novel molecular diagnostic and therapeutic targets during LBP progression by analyzing disease-associated transcriptomic changes in post-mortem tissue and in different in vitro and in vivo models of PD.
Candidate’s with a master’s degree in neuroscience (e.g. biology, molecular medicine or related subjects) are encouraged to apply. We are looking for highly motivated applicants with good communication and team-working skills, fluent in English and eager to work in an international environment. Methodically, the project will combine electrophysiological and biochemical/cell biological methods to investigate novel molecular targets in PD pathology. Prior experience in neuroscience/electrophysiology and in investigating neurodegenerative conditions is preferred.
